Dana Biosphere Reserve was established in 1989 by the Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature (RSCN), which is a non-governmental organization devoted to the conservation of Jordan’s natural resources. The area was selected due to its incredible biodiversity. It is Jordan’s largest nature reserve, covering some 320 square kilometers. It is a system of valleys and mountains that extend from the top of the Jordan Rift Valley down to the desert lowlands of Wadi Araba

The history of human habitation in the Dana area dates back more than 4000 years, with many ancient archaeological sites found in the reserve demonstrating the area’s historical significance. These include ruins from the Roman, Byzantine, and Islamic periods.

The indigenous people of Dana, who have lived in the area for hundreds of years. They have largely sustained themselves through agriculture, with terraced fields on the hillsides where they grow a variety of crops including fruit trees and vegetables.

When the reserve was first established, the RSCN made significant efforts to work with the local population to ensure the conservation measures benefited them as well as the environment. This included initiatives to develop sustainable tourism, providing jobs and income for the local people.
