Top 5 Waterfalls to Visit on New Zealand’s North Island!

The Top 5 Waterfalls in New Zealand's North Island

1. Wairere Falls

The first of the top five waterfalls to visit on the North Island is Wairere Falls. Located in the Waikato region, Wairere Falls is one of the most stunning waterfalls in New Zealand. It’s a two-tiered waterfall, which means it’s made up of two distinct cascades. 

The best way to experience Wairere Falls is to take a hike to the top of the waterfall.  At the top, you’ll be rewarded with stunning views of the cascading water and lush green surroundings. It’s a great spot to take some photos or just enjoy the beauty of nature.

2. Bridal Veil Falls

The second of the top five waterfalls to visit on the North Island is Bridal Veil Falls. Located near Rotorua, Bridal Veil Falls is one of the most impressive waterfalls in New Zealand. This two-tiered waterfall cascades down a cliff into a deep pool, creating a stunning display of misty beauty.

Be sure to bring a waterproof camera, as the mist from the waterfall can be quite strong.

3. Huka Falls

An equally important waterfall comes in at third of the top five waterfalls to visit on the North Island. It is Huka Falls. Located near Taupo, Huka Falls is another very impressive waterfall in New Zealand. This powerful waterfall cascades down a narrow gorge, creating a thundering display of power and beauty.

The best way to experience Huka Falls is by taking a boat tour. These tours will take you up close to the waterfall, letting you experience it up close. The boat tours are very popular and can be booked easily online.

4. KareKare

The fourth of the top five waterfalls to visit on the North Island is KareKare Falls. Located in Waitakere Forest near the Coast, KareKare Falls is one of  my favorite waterfalls in New Zealand. I visit this one whenever I have a chance to get over to the West Coast. This smaller waterfall cascades down in a lush green forest, creating a stunning display of beauty and tranquility.

The best way to experience KareKare Falls is to take a short hike to the waterfall with a picnic basket, relax and go for a swim. The hike is easy and can be completed in about 10 minutes.

5. Marocopa Falls

Lastly, (but surely not least), the fifth of the top five waterfalls to visit on the North Island is Morocopa Falls. Located near Whitianga, This powerful waterfall cascades down a steep rock face, creating a thundering display of crashing water.
